April 25, 2005
Ladies and Gentlemen,

It is that time of the year again when we must finalize the plans for the Memorial Day Service at the Nimitz Museum. The service will be conducted at 10:00 AM, Monday, May 30, 2005 in the Plaza of Presidents at the Museum (Please be there by 9:00).

This year we will have 38 ships or other military units participating as compared with 28 last year. You can see that it is getting bigger each year. Again this year, we will print the histories of each participant and will include them in the printed program that we hand out. We will urge the audience to read those histories at their leisure.

We understand that you want the memorial service to be a special time of remembering and honoring all or our comrades-in-arm that gave their lives for our country during our various wars. We will do our very best to make the service a dignified and meaningful service. We are hopeful that we can keep the program to approximately one hour.

As in the past, you need to be aware that as your unit's representative, you will be seated in the front row. The wreaths will be placed by your unit's plaque and when you place them you will only have to move them a couple of feet. At the appropriate place in our program, I will call the roll of all military units by name. As I call your unit's name, you will rise and stand at attention until all participants' names have been called. When all are ready, I will invite all of the veterans in the audience to stand and join us in a military salute. I will give the command "HAND SALUTE". You will all in unison render a military salute while at attention. (If you have not served in the military and you feel uncomfortable with the hand salute, please put you right hand over your heart.) You will hold your salute until I give the command "TWO", at which time you will complete your salute by bringing your hand down smartly. I will then ask you to be seated. At the end of the ceremony, you will move to your wreath and place it by your plaque along the wall and remain there for approximately ten minutes after the program has concluded so that you will be available if your comrades or the press want to take pictures. (Be sure to locate your units' plaque prior to the program).

I understand that we are no longer in the military; however, we want to show pride and dignity in what we do, so let's all do it smartly. Your comrades will be proud of you.

For your information casual dress is fine. It gets hot sitting outside in Texas. The attire for the men participating in the ceremony is navy blue or black slacks and a white polo type shirt with a collar. If the ship's name is on the shirt that is great, but it is not required. If you have a hat representing your unit, please wear that. Ladies, a white blouse and dark skirt or slacks will be fine.

The printed program will contain about 40 pages this year. You may obtain copies at the Memorial Services on May 31. Please keep in mind that this event originally started with just a handful of shipmates from the U.S.S. Colorado (we still owe them a big thank you, so if you see one of the Colorado Sailors please tell them how much this service has meant to you over the years) getting together for a rather informal service. It has grown each year and continues to grow. It has become quite a task to coordinate with folks who live all over the USA. Inevitably mistakes will be made. It is our goal to make it a meaningful, honorable, and dignified service. We sincerely hope you are pleased with our efforts.

Fair Winds,
Northcutt
