In spite of being presented Navy Occupation Medals for Japan, the crew of the USS Euryale (AS 22) was not considered a participant of the American occupation of Japan following World War II by the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA).
Now, the participation criteria has been modified, making those veterans who were present in Hiro Wan between August 6, 1945 and July 1, 1946 participants for the occupation of Hiroshima.
Heretofore, Hiro Wan was considered just beyond the ten mile limit, which made the veterans ineligible for presumptive compensation. (The Euryale was in Hiro Wan in October 1945, which is near the Japanese Naval Base at Kure, Japan.)
Therefore, those veterans who served on board the USS Euryale (AS 22) between the dates indicated may be eligible for presumptive compensation if the individual has one of the cancers listed by the Veterans Administration for Ionizing Radiation.
