In an interview with the Naval Reserve Association, Admiral Michael G. Mullen, USN, CNO, spoke to the role of the Navy as a "super power." Following are some of his comments that we, as retired ex-Naval Reserve guys might appreciate.
"Without question, our job is to defend the American people by staying able and willing to work with partners all over the globe -- particularly in and around ungoverned spaces. That's what this 1,000-ship Navy is all about....
We must be able to win the big and the small wars. Two challenges, one Fleet. It's the small ones are now coming to grips with.
We must focus on a sustainable, progressive mix of capabilities that will adapt to myriad circumstances and that we can evolve along with the global environment and whatever challenges it may bring.
It also involves the skill sets and talents of our Sailors and civilians and how we train them, our operational concepts, our business practices -- everything we do to "maintain, train, and equip" our Navy.
We are a maritime nation. We need a strong Navy.
I never take recruiting and retention for granted. Right now, we are doing very well. Retention numbers continue to exceed our goals; and, with a few exceptions, we are doing extremely well in recruiting.
I normally get two reactions when I talk to Sailors: "Put me in coach! Let me know where the action is," and, "Well, I thought I signed up to this or that." I understand both reactions. I really do. But, from my visits to the Fleet and to the combat zone I have to say that most Sailors embrace these new jobs and are eager to contribute. "
From his comments, it appears that our Navy is in good hands. Thanks, Admiral Mullen.
