Powell Black

Ever now and then, one gets an email, a letter or a phone call from someone from his or her past. This happened to me the other day when I received an email from one of our former EURYALE shipmates. I could not recall him since he came aboard in the fall of 1945 when we were at Sasebo, and I left for home in November. What he sent is reproduced below.

Hi Powell: I noticed the other day that you were on board the subtender Euryale. I got on board in Sasabo, Japan fall of 1945 and came back to the states to Vallejo, CA where we demomissioned the ship. I left the Navy in June, 1946. My cousin, Clayton Harris was on the same ship when it was in Perth. I wanted to give you an e-mail since I lived in Sumter in 1948 and 1949, came back to Atlanta March of 1950. While there I worked as a heating engineer for Bill Fort at Fort Sheet Metal Works. This was at the old location on Hampton Ave.

I was married while working at Fort but to an Atlanta girl and we lived in an apartment in Sen. Scarbough's home at 425 N. Main St. Sumter is a nice town, had quite a few friends there. Incidentally, I was a radarman, RDR 3/C on board. I now live in Acworth Georgia and the girl I married while in Sumter died after a little over 50 years of marriage. Thanks for listening.

Ovid Harris

Unfortunately, I cannot recall that long ago, since we had over fourteen hundred men in ship's company, plus the Relief Crews. (Recently, I learned on the internet that it was officially, 1,403.) Some of you may remember his cousin, Clayton Harris. I don't, but I remember quite vividly our Perth days and the rides we had to take from Fremantle to get there and back. But my memory isn't what it used to be, and remembering names and faces from over fifty years ago is not my cup of tea at age 85. Faces I can do sometimes.

I sent Ovid an email thanking him for his input and will send him a picture of the ship when I get his mailing address. (If any of you do not have one, let me know and I'll send you one.) This is being inserted in the GORGON in the chance that some of you might remember either Ovid or Clayton and possibly contact them and tell some war stories together.

Also, if any of you can drag up memories that might be of general or even personal interest to your old shipmates, send them to Sheri. She is our honorary shipmate and our great Webmaster. She's our life-line in keeping us informed. She'll appreciate it.
